Directions:
| To reach us from the M5 and Exeter, take the A38 for Plymouth. After the Ashburton turn-offs, watch for the A384 for TOTNES and turn left off the dual carriageway. As you reach Totnes, at the traffic lights, turn right onto the A381 (Kingsbridge). Go through the villages of Harbertonford and Halwell. At the BP garage at Halwell follow the road round to the right, towards Kingsbridge. One mile after the BP garage turn left for Slapton. | ![]() |
Watermill Cottages are three miles inland from Slapton village on the South Devon coast, between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth in The South Hams AONB. We are just 5 minutes' drive from the year-round dog-friendly beaches at Slapton Sands, Strete and Torcross (Start Bay) with many more beaches in easy driving range. Slapton and Strete are the closest villages and both have good village shops and pubs - two dog-friendly pubs in Slapton. |
DO NOT USE SAT NAV FROM TOTNES AS IT WILL DIRECT YOU DOWN A STEEP HAIRBEND TRACK UNSUITABLE FOR VEHICLES.
Drive for just under four miles on this lane, known locally as Five Mile Lane. It's narrow in places and there are passing places. At Buckland Cross (the crossroads' signs have the same of the crossroad written vertically on the post) turn left, signposted Gara Mill. After about 50 yards, turn right by the third telegraph pole into a narrow unmarked lane by a metal gate (important not to miss!). After about 500 yards you reach a junction where you'll see a house called Merrifield on your left. This is Merrifield Cross. Go straight ahead on the lane, marked “Farms only” on the junction sign, if the hedge hasn't grown over it. This lane is narrow and twisting and dips up and down. Follow it for about one and a half miles, past Hansel Cottage and between the walls of the hamlet of Hansel and down to the river. The last part of the lane is pretty rural; keep faith and keep going until you see a river!
If you are coming from Slapton take the road to Totnes. About half a mile out of the village you will reach the Start Bay Centre (old school) where you turn right. Stay on this road for another half mile or so. When you reach the junction at the end of the road you are at Merrifield Cross, with the house called Merrifield in front of you. Turn right and keep going as the lane bends, narrows and dips. You will pass Hansel Cottage and Hansel to reach us.
Higher North Mill and Watermill Cottages are right at the bottom of the hill, by the river, and a mile from the “Farms Only” sign.
